The last time this happened a few year ago, the local repair person was nice enough to tell me how check it was the thermal fuse by taking the 2 wires off the fuse and connecting them If the dryer starts heating up, then you need a thermal fuse.

When your Kenmore dryer makes a squealing sound and has a burning smell, in many cases, they are related. A dryer works by rotating a large heated drum on a horizontal axle. The drum is propelled by a rotating drive belt attached to an electrical motor in the same way an automobile fan belt turns an accessory, like a water pump or an alternator. Any one of these components can go bad and cause a squealing noise and a burning smell.

A dryer drive belt that slips while rotating the dryer drum will squeal and smoke. A slipping drive belt may be frayed, cut or otherwise damaged so it no longer performs effectively. In many cases, after years of use, the belt stretches, loses grip, then squeals and smokes. A damaged belt must be replaced for proper dryer drum function.

The idler pulley wheel keeps tension on the belt to prevent it from slipping.
